Prof. Abhay Pethe

Prof. Abhay Pethe has held several positions in the University of Mumbai’s Department of Economics, including as Professor of Econometrics, Lakdawala Chair Professor in Planning and Development, and more recently as Dr. Vibhooti Shukla Chair in Urban Economics and Regional Development. Most recently, he was a Distinguished Fellow at ORF and a Senior Resident Fellow at the Mumbai School of Economics and Public Policy (MSE-PP). He has successfully guided 25 PhD students. He was Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Member of the Management Council, the highest executive authority in the University.

He has engaged in consultancy and expert committee, particularly with multilateral organisations such as the World Bank, World Bank Institute, UNDP, and UNICEF, and served on government committees like the Mashelkar Committee on NEP in Maharashtra and the Kelkar Committee on Regional Balance.

He was Chairman of Campus Development Council and member of the Governing Board & Academic Council of TISS. He has been a member of the Advisory Committee of the Central Board of Film Certification and Marathi Viswakosh Mandal; and associated with the Maharashtra Economic Development Council (MEDC), Bombay Chamber IMC and Bombay First. He is on the Board of Studies of various autonomous colleges and chairs the Economics Board at Welingkar Institute of Management and Research. Currently, he is a special advisor to the Vice Chancellor of Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics (GIPE) and a Senior Fellow at Pune International Centre (PIC).
