‘Pune Samwad’, PIC’s monthly programme in Marathi featured a conversation with Mr. Suresh Naik, President, International Space Society on the topic, ‘Role of Space Technology in Military Readiness’. The Webinar was chaired by Lt. Gen. Vinayak Patankar, Trustee, Pune International Centre. Smt. Swati Raje, President, Bhasha Foundation Pune was the moderator for the event.
Mr. Naik shared that in the year 1957, the Soviet Union unveiled Sputnik 1 which was the first artificial Earth satellite. Thereafter, satellite imaging technologies were developed to create reconnaissance satellites which are deployed for military or intelligence applications. Mr. Naik gave a detailed explanation of optical, thermal and radar imaging sensors which play a critical role in enabling satellites to collect data. In March 2019, India tested an anti-satellite weapon designed to incapacitate or destroy satellites for strategic or tactical purposes. This operation was code named Mission Shakti and the successful demonstration of this weapon proves India’s ability to intercept intercontinental ballistic missiles. The Webinar concluded with an engaging Q&A session.
