‘Pune Samwad’, PIC’s monthly programme in Marathi featured a conversation with Mr. Suresh Naik, President, International Space Society on the topic, ‘Role of Space Technology in Military Readiness’. The Webinar was chaired by Lt. Gen. Vinayak Patankar, Trustee, Pune International Centre. Smt. Swati Raje, President, Bhasha Foundation Pune was the moderator for the event. 
Mr. Naik shared that in the year 1957, the Soviet Union unveiled Sputnik 1 which was the first artificial Earth satellite. Thereafter, satellite imaging technologies were developed to create reconnaissance satellites which are deployed for military or intelligence applications. Mr. Naik gave a detailed explanation of optical, thermal and radar imaging sensors which play a critical role in enabling satellites to collect data. In March 2019, India tested an anti-satellite weapon designed to incapacitate or destroy satellites for strategic or tactical purposes. This operation was code named Mission Shakti and the successful demonstration of this weapon proves India’s ability to intercept intercontinental ballistic missiles. PIC Adda on “Turmoil in Sri Lanka”

Amb. Rajendra Abhyankar, former Indian Ambassador to the European Union, Belgium and Luxembourg and member, PIC was the guest speaker for this month’s PIC Adda. Amb. Sudhir Devare, former Director General, Indian Council of World Affairs (ICWA) and member, PIC was the Chairperson.
Amb. Abhyankar who had served in Sri Lanka as Deputy High Commissioner in his diplomatic career of nearly four decades spoke of the Sri Lankan crisis in terms of 3 broad elements. First, the continuing and undaunted protests of the Sri Lankan people; the tepid response of the international community and the roots of the economic crisis.
He noted that the downward spiral in Sri Lanka began two decades ago. The current crisis was compounded by heavy subsidies, populist value-added tax cuts, a government that failed to invest in welfare measures and the sudden adoption of organic farming across the country. Amb. Abhyankar described the crisis as “an Arab spring moment for the Sri Lankan people”.
The talk and the discussion with Amb. Devare was enriched by the Q&A session with the audience.

Book Release Programme and Discussion “Sharad Joshi: The Man Who Introduced Bharat to India”

A discussion on the theme ‘Sharad Joshi: The Man who Introduced Bharat to India’ was organised during the release of the book, ‘Sharad Joshi: Leading Farmers to the Centre Stage’ by the well-known writer Mr. Bhanu Kale. Mr. Kumar Ketkar, eminent journalist and member, Rajya Sabha chaired the event with Mr Kale, Prof Pradeep Apte, Senior Fellow, PIC and Dr. Ajit Ranade, Vice-Chancellor, Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics, and Trustee, PIC, participating in the discussion.
Mr. Govindbhau Joshi, Executive Trustee, Shetkari Sanghatana Trust shared memories and anecdotes from his four decades association with the noted farmer leader.
Mr. Bhanu Kale explained how Sharad Joshi understood India as two contrasting nations, Bharat and India, of the rich and the poor. Joshi realised the economic distress of farmers and dedicated his life to empowering them by demanding remunerative prices for farm produce.
Prof. Apte spoke of Mr Joshi’s quest for new ideas and efforts to liberalise the agricultural sector and shared anecdotes of his close association with him. Dr. Ajit Ranade read excerpts from the book and spoke of Sharad Joshi’s personal struggles during his efforts to bring about agricultural reforms.
Mr. Kumar Ketkar described the book as an intellectual read with the potential for a documentary, “on a man who was a maverick”.

 

 

Environment Day 2022 ”Launch Of India’s Youth Manifesto For Climate – Secure Future”

On the eve of World Environment Day, ‘India’s Youth Manifesto for a Climate-Secure Future’ (click here to read) prepared by team members from the Energy, Environment and Climate Change (EECC) research vertical was released ceremoniously at the Sumant Moolgaokar auditorium by Ms. Vandana Chavan, MP, Rajya Sabha.
Ms. Chavan, a former Mayor of Pune, visited the PIC office and discussed PIC’s Carbon Net Neutrality Project for the PMR Region. She applauded the initiative and later, during the event, urged the youth to engage with local municipal bodies to ensure that future projects are developed in an environmentally sustainable manner.
Prithviraj Lingayat, a member of Team EECC presented the Youth Manifesto and said that change in governance, policies and political will is of utmost importance for a climate-secure future. Pournima Agarkar, Secretary of the Indian Network on Ethics and Climate Change (INECC), and Tanmay Kanitkar, Co-Founder, of Parivartan, were the youth speakers at the event. Dr. Vijay Kelkar, Vice-President, PIC, and Prof. Amitav Mallik, Trustee, PIC & EECC Head participated in the discussions.

 

Book Release & Discussion “West Asia at War: Repression, Resistance and Great Power Games”

Pune International Centre was delighted to host Amb. Talmiz Ahmad, the former Indian Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, as the guest speaker for a discussion on his book ‘West Asia at War: Repression, Resistance and Great Power Games’. Amb. Gautam Bambawale, former Indian Ambassador to China, Bhutan & former High Commissioner to Pakistan chaired the event. Dr. Alvite Singh Ningthoujam, Asst. Professor, Symbiosis School of International Studies participated as a discussant.
Amb. Ahmad said that popular resistance remains vibrant in the West Asia region as people continue to voice their discontent through demonstrations. When West Asia and North Africa are analysed collectively, it becomes apparent that major deprivation, poverty and unemployment exist across the region.
Amb. Bambawale was full of praise for the book which he said, “…has taken a long sweep of history to explain what is happening in the geography today”. The event concluded with a lively Q&A session with the audience.
 

Book Discussion ‘The Struggle and the Promise: Restoring India’s Potential’

PIC’s Founding Member and the co-Chairman of Forbes Marshall, Dr Naushad Forbes, was the guest speaker for a discussion on his book, ‘The Struggle and the Promise: Restoring India’s Potential’. Dr Vijay Kelkar was in the Chair and PIC Members, Prof Ajay Shah and Dr V. Premnath were the discussants.
Dr. Forbes, in his opening remarks, highlighted India’s soft power and presented the three key priorities for the nation discussed in the book: Giving the industry a greater role in nation building, strengthen the quality of our liberal democracy and maintain a balance between the political and cultural institutions of the country. He said inclusive and equitable growth could happen in the decades to come once we focus on increasing CSR activities, promoting mass skill development and investing in R&D infrastructure.
Dr. Ajay Shah, Co-founder, XKDR Forum & Senior Fellow PIC, said while the support to the industry was positive, the lack of funding for research institutions by the government was disappointing. Dr. V. Premnath, Head of Innovations at CSIR-National Chemical Laboratory,  Founder Director, Venture Centre & Member PIC, reiterated the point of expanding the number of institutes in the R&D sector and listed steps to arrest the growing ‘brain drain’ which ultimately benefits the host nations.
Dr. Vijay Kelkar, in his concluding remarks, praised Dr. Forbes for his meticulous research and shared his observations on the current GST structure, the growing debate on ‘Centralization vs Decentralization’ and the way forward for Indian businesses to grow. The discussion included a lively round of questions from the audience.

 
 

Role of Gold in India: From Ancient Times to Modern Economic Policy

Prof. Satish Deodhar, the distinguished Founding Member of Pune International Centre and Professor of Economics at the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Ahmedabad, was the guest speaker for this month’s edition of PIC Adda.
He made a detailed presentation on the significance of gold in Indian society since ancient times and its impact on the Indian economy. He pointed out that while temples in India hold 4000 tonnes of gold, official reserves of gold are only 745 tonnes.
Prof. Deodhar explained that there are multiple ways in which idle gold stock can be recycled and channeled into the financial market. Gold Monetization Scheme (GMS), incentivizing banks and consumers, increasing access to the gold loan network of banks and keeping inflation low were some of the ways in which Indian households could be discouraged from hoarding gold, he said.
He suggested that India should develop the largest gold museum in the world. The lecture concluded with an interactive Q&A session which enriched the discussion.

 

Lecture on ‘India’s  emerging Start up Revolution: Learnings from the Indus Valley Report 2022

Well-known columnist and media executive turned venture capitalist, Mr. Sajith Pai, Director, Blume Ventures was invited by PIC to speak on the topic, “India’s Emerging Startup Revolution: Learnings from the Indus Valley Report 2022”.
Mr. Alok Kshirsagar, Senior Partner, McKinsey and Co., and member, PIC, Chaired the event.
While lauding the achievements of Start-up’s in India, the chairperson, Mr. Alok Kshirsagar, spoke of the need for start-ups to “scale-up”.
An extremely informative presentation on India and the Startup ecosystem in the country as depicted in the latest Indus Valley Report was made by Mr Pai. He explained that India is a country of contradictions: for example, while India has the highest percentage of female pilots, it is a country with one of the lowest rates of female labour participation. He explained that startups were creating new jobs in sectors where opportunities did not exist, namely, eTailing, Fintech, and SaaS. The ‘Wang Trifecta’ was a key driver of startups in India with cheap bandwidth, smartphones in every pocket and seamless, digital payment gateways. Section 3 of the report gave recommendations for the future. The lecture concluded with an interactive Q&A session.

“पुण्याचं पाणी कुठे मुरतंय?”

‘Pune Samwad,’ PIC’s monthly programme in Marathi, featured a conversation with renowned Pune-based environmentalist, Prof. Vijay Paranjpye on the topic “पुण्याचं पाणी कुठे मुरतंय?”  The webinar was chaired by Shri. S. Chockalingam (IAS), Director General, Yashwantrao Chavan Academy for Development Administration (YASHADA), Pune,’ with well-known water expert Mr Vivek Bodhankar as a discussant. The event was anchored by Dr. Vishal Gaikwad, Research Fellow, PIC
In his opening remarks, Shri. S. Chockalingam pointed out that a number of dams and water bodies exist around Pune city, but due to the irrational usage of water and poor conservation, the city is bound to face shortages in the near future.
Prof Paranjpye presented a detailed analysis of the water availability and usage in Pune city and said the people were using water more as a commodity and less as nature’s bounty. He said a lack of open domain knowledge regarding local water supply systems, drainage supply systems, stormwater drains and underground water sources has caused this crisis. Mr. Bodhankar, added that due to poor participation at the ward/local level, there is a need to generate this awareness at the grassroot level about water conservation. Rapid Urbanisation and over-reliance on water tankers were symptomatic of the water inequality and indiscriminate water use by the society today, said Prof. Paranjpye.
In his concluding remarks, the chairperson emphasized the need to focus on long term water issues and short-term measures. The Q&A segment focused on water conservation in residential societies and the drawbacks of using R.O filtration technology.

Government’s Strategy and Policies Towards Achieving the Target of 5 Trillion Dollars Economy by 2025

The Pune International Centre (PIC) was delighted to host Mr. Sanjeev Sanyal, Member of the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council. He spoke on the topic, ‘Government’s Strategy and Policies Towards Achieving the Target of $5 Trillion Economy by 2025.’ The event was chaired by Dr. Ajit Ranade, Vice Chancellor, Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics (GIPE) and the noted journalist and author, Mr. Shankkar Aiyar, Member, PIC, participated in the discussion.
The event chair, Dr. Ranade, in his opening remarks, gave the audience a brief overview of the Indian economy, post Covid-19. According to him, aiming for a high employment ratio and consistent economic growth were necessary for the nation to achieve the target of a $5 Tr. economy in coming years.
Mr Sanyal spoke of the measures taken by the government in the wake of the pandemic in early 2020 and explained the various liberal policies rolled out were now beginning to give results. The Atmanirbhar Bharat programme, aimed at reducing dependence on imports of crucial commodities, focus on Privatization of PSUs, providing an enabling environment to MSMEs through new schemes were the other key points discussed during the webinar. Mr. Shankkar Aiyar, highlighted the limitations of the primary sector in providing employment, and said, “With 40% population, sustaining on just 16% GDP, it’s necessary for the policy makers to make Agriculture remunerative and productive in years to come.”
In his concluding remarks, Mr. Sanyal said improving municipal governance and enforcement of legal contracts were the two low hanging fruits where timely action can help yield benefits in the long run. The webinar concluded with an interactive Q&A session.
