Overview:
This discussion paper presents a practical, parameter-driven framework to systematically assess the suitability of sites for installing Smart Microgrids (SMGs), recognising that site selection is the most critical determinant of SMG technical, economic, and social success. It proposes a structured scorecard that evaluates potential sites across six key dimensions—demand profile, energy efficiency, past technology adoption, billing structure, social impact, and institutional readiness—using clearly defined must-have and good-to-have parameters with assigned weights. Designed as a decision-support tool rather than a technical design manual, the framework enables planners, utilities, institutions, industries, and communities to objectively screen sites, de-risk investments, prioritise high-impact locations, and build a strong business case for SMGs that support grid resilience, renewable integration, cost optimisation, and inclusive energy transitions.
